Most players attempt to control the golf club by manipulating it with their hands. This is an almost sure-fire way to develop inconsistency and errors in your ball striking. There are strong forces acting on you and the club when you make a golf swing. The best – and most powerful – way to swing the club is to work with these forces.
Your hands are the connection between you and the club. The more they are a free hinge, the more control you will have over the swinging club head. Holding the club correctly is essential to controlling the club face, and controlling the club head is more about how your arms and body move.
In the video I am swinging the club, holding it just in my fingertips. The objective is to completely remove my ability to manipulate the club’s approach to impact; all I can do is hold on.
The surprising thing is when I hold the club in my fingertips, it swings as it should. The club trails my left arm and hands until impact, or just after impact. This is something the vast majority of golfers spend their golfing lives attempting to create.
A bonus is that my body, arms and club improve their sequence as well. This is because my hand movement affects my body movement, something rarely suspected.
Next time you are practicing allow your wrists to be as free as they would be if you were holding the club in your fingertips. You may be pleasantly surprised with your results.
We have a new lesson booking system at Yarra Bend, so if you are online creating a lesson booking you will see the page looking quite different. Let me know what you think of the new system when you make a booking.
